Five weeks and one day till wheels up
Since the defining purpose of this blog was to update the world on my grand scheme to move to York and take over the world, I mean, perform cutting edge medical research, I thought I would provide an update. The kind people at the British Embassy in Canberra have issued me with a certificate of entitlement to the "Right of Abode", which is like a permanent visa. Because my darling mumma is English, I now have the right to live and work in the UK and come and go as I please. I am entirely free from United Kingdom Immigration Control - and that's a quote - which means I get to use the "British Passport" holders lane at the airport *giggle* I could potentially become a citizen, but the process is far more complex if you're claiming citizenship through your mother rather than your father, damn British Patriarchal system. It could take up to 18 months and is a painful process... so I'll wait till I get over there and decide if it's worth it.
I have been househunting using a flatshare website and have got a couple of really good leads. The technologies of the modern age of communication are extremely useful in this purpose... sending emails about houses, with links showing the address on google maps and online street directories, photographs of the room and the apartment.. it's almost as good as being there. However, I do know someone in York who has volunteered to pop by the place and have a look, to make sure it's not in the middle of a freeway or that my future housemate isn't a complete loon.
I've spent a ridiculous amount of money on moving boxes, who knew cardboard was so expensive.. but hey, I guess it doesn't grow on trees. I've even got packing tape. I've even thought about starting to think about what I want to pack. I've even thought about bubble wrap. And newspaper. And those clever cardboard inserts that let you pack crockery and glasses. One of these days, I may even actually start packing. Perhaps tomorrow, or maybe the next day ... ahh well it doesn't really matter.. I've got AGES till I leave...
Haven't I ?
